ABOUT DR. CHARLES T. BATTLE, JR.
Dr. Charles Tecumseh Battle, Jr., a native of Mobile, Alabama, was the eldest of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Battle, Sr.'s five children. He received a B.S. degree from Alabama State University where he was a charter member of the Beta Upsilon Chapter. He was an educator for several years in the Mobile Public School System until 1950 when he pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Battle and his family moved to Seneca, South Carolina in July 1954, where he began and continued his practice in medicine until his retirement in 1992. He became a member of St. James United Methodist Church - which later merged with John Wesley and Trinity United Methodist Church to form New Harmony United Methodist Church - where he held several church offices.
He was very active in his local community and became recognized on a statewide level for his dedicated service to South Carolina citizens.
Dr. Battle joined the staff of Oconee Memorial Hospital in 1956 and was named staff emeritus in January, 1997. He was designated a Palmetto Gentleman by Governor David Beasley who bestowed upon him the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor accorded a private citizen of South Carolina.
He actively served as a member of numerous professional and service organizations, including:

Dr. Battle died in 1998 at the age of 79, but his memory and dedication to the community lives on through the annual scholarship established in his name by Rho Delta Lambda.
SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA & INFORMATION
The Scholarship Award will be $1,000. At least four (4) scholarships are awarded each year.
Scholarship Criteria:
Applicant's must be a graduating senior attending a high school in the communities served by the Rho Delta Lambda Chapter
Applicant must attend an accredited technical college, junior college or 4 year college/university of his/her choice (NOTE: admission/attendance is a requirement before scholarship funds are issued.)
Applicant must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
Applicant must submit a completed application to the Scholarship Committee for consideration
Factors considered includes academic school records, personal qualifications, citizenship, leadership, and financial need
Completed Scholarship Application Packet must include:
Google Docs Application form (click black box below to go to the form)
Two (2) character reference letters
Certified copy of secondary school transcript through the end of your junior year
Biographical statement that covers your education background (activities, achievements, obstacles, etc), financial need, and any other pertinent information about yourself and/or your family
An originally typewritten essay addressing the topic "How this Scholarship Will Help Me Further My Career Goals"
ALL INFORMATION PROVIDED IS CONFIDENTIAL.
Completed application packet MUST BE RECEIVED by December 16, 2024, to be considered
Applicant must appear before the Scholarship Committee for a personal interview, if requested.
Scholarship recipients will be announced and recognized at the Annual RDL Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast. The breakfast will be on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Westside High School, Anderson, SC at 10:00 am
